1 Samuel 17:42 (KJV)
And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
From our above Scripture, Goliath despised David and paid with his life for looking down on him. Goliath underestimates David due to his youth and appearance, but little does he know that David’s faith and courage will lead to his downfall. A common saying is that God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called. Goliath did not qualify David to fight him, but God had qualified David to defeat him. Goliath did not know that although David looked like an ordinary teenager, God had destined the young David to kill him. In Proverbs 6:16, the Bible says the Lord hates and cannot tolerate a proud look. Whenever we despise or look down on anyone, we indirectly look down on God. God is so in love with mankind that He says whatever we do to them is what we have done to Him (Matthew 25:40).
In this life, anyone we despise will be greater than us. Isaiah 49:7 says, “Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, Israel’s Holy One, to him whom man rejects and despises, to him whom the nations abhor, to the servant of rulers: Kings shall see you and arise; princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the Lord, Who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, Who has chosen you.” One season, Joseph was despised by his brothers, sold into slavery, and imprisoned; the following season, he became the second in command of Egypt; in today’s world, he will be called the prime minister. One season, Mordecai, who was sitting outside the king’s palace and despised by Haman, who had planned to hang on the gallows fifty cubits high, had a change in his life. The following season, he sat inside the palace, and Haman, who plotted against him, inherited his own gallows. Many in their daily life are always in the process of despising others for one reason or the other. However, if Naaman had despised the advice of the slave girl, he would not have been healed from his leprosy. The beggar on the streets may be the one to help us when no one can. The poor people living next door may provide the information to save us from impending trouble. The Church or Pastor, although younger than our age, may have the solution to our afflictions. Do not look down on anyone, for God created every human being and has His plan and purpose for them. So, no matter where they are in life now, there is a great future for them.
Beloved, no matter the height you attain in life, never despise anyone. The next time someone despises you, don’t be troubled, for we serve a very Faithful God who turns things around and makes them beautiful in their own time. Do not be bitter or worried when you are despised because a time is coming when you will be greater than those who despise you. The Bible says blessed are you when men despise you and separate you from their company. Rejoice because God is Faithful and has chosen you. Kings will see you and arise, and they shall prostrate themselves before you, for the stone the builders rejected has become the headstone of the corner. Have an attitude of thanksgiving no matter your present condition, and see what God will do in your life. Our God of unmerited favor will come through for you in this season in Jesus’ Name. Your mockers will wish they never uttered those hurtful words. Today, seek God with all of you and stay faithful to Him, for you will have the last laugh. Remember, never look down on anyone because they could be the solution to your challenges.
O Lord, grant me the wisdom not to despise anyone in Jesus’ Name.
