Psalm 60:11 (KJV)
Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.
The verse forcefully underlines the ineffectiveness of relying solely on human strength and wisdom, firmly stressing that human help falls short despite our best efforts. The Psalm in question recounts a pivotal experience in the life of King David, wherein he wrestles with feelings of rejection by God amidst a series of trials. Embroiled in conflict, David acknowledges the inadequacy of human efforts to overcome his challenges. He eschews reliance on military leaders, political alliances, or treaties, wholeheartedly seeking God’s assistance for comfort, deliverance, and salvation. Through his reflection and supplication to God, David cried to God for help. He firmly believed that victory over his adversaries hinges solely on God’s Presence in battle, acknowledging that true assistance and triumph stem only from God. David fully comprehends that divine rejection does not signal the end of the journey. By placing unwavering trust in God, defeat is simply a stepping stone to triumph. He firmly asserts that victory over adversaries is only achievable through unwavering trust in God. Psalm 124:8 says, “Our help is in the name of the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.”
The Help of God is not just superior, but also durable, dependable, and more reliable than the help of man or the hurt of the devil. Without God’s Help, man is indeed hopeless and helpless, for God is our present help in trouble. When we face difficulties, it’s natural to look for solutions within our own capabilities or from those around us. However, we are to turn to God first. He is our ultimate source of help and strength, capable of providing solutions beyond our understanding. 2 Chronicles 14:11-13 says, “And Asa cried unto the Lord his God, and said, Lord, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O Lord our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O Lord, thou art our God; let no man prevail against thee. So the Lord smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled. And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the Lord, and before his host; and they carried away very much spoil.” The Lord gave Asa the help he needed to defeat his enemies and this same God shall help and preserve us from all evil as we trust Him.
