Don’t Lie To One Another

Colossians 3:9(MSG)

Don’t lie to one another. You’re done with that old life. It’s like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you’ve stripped off and put in the fire.

There is a plague that is grieving the heart of God because it is preventable and can be cut short. It is now commonplace that people are deceived into accepting lies as normal instead of recognizing and resisting them. This plague is the practice of lying and dishonesty. Lying has become an issue in our world today. The Scripture makes us understand in Proverbs 6:16-19 that God hates the lying tongue and is an abomination to Him. Anything that is not the truth is a lie, sadly. In Exodus 20:16, the ninth Commandment says, “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.” The bearing of false testimony is strictly prohibited by God, as no good thing can be achieved by untruthful testimony. Telling lies against anyone or the church is an evil deed that can have devastating effects. Those who bear false witness are in danger of the judgment of God, and profiting from the misfortune of others will not go unpunished.

Christians are also succumbing to this pandemic of lying. It is an ugly evil! The Bible tells us in John 8:44 that lying began with the devil and that he is the father of lies. The devil is behind every lie, and as Christians, we are admonished not to lie to one another. It is a critical matter with God when we lie. In Acts chapter 5, Ananias and Sapphira both fell dead when they lied to the Holy Spirit. It is written in Ephesians 4:25, “What this adds up to, then, is this: no more lies, no more pretense. Tell your neighbor the truth. In the body of Christ, we’re all connected to each other, after all. When you lie to others, you end up lying to yourself.” Lies can only be on the lips of those who have not put off the old self with their deeds. On the other hand, speaking the truth always is an attribute of the new man in Christ Jesus. That is because the Spirit of Christ that births the new life of God in us when we become born again is the Spirit of Truth.

Beloved, lies cannot lead any person anywhere. Therefore, refuse to live in it because the consequence of lying is death. Insist on the truth always. Whatever your excuse might be, train yourself to speak the truth at all times. The truth will set you free and make you triumphant. Watch those who go around telling LIES about others. Anywhere you see someone magnifying the faults of others or telling lies, you are seeing the agents of the devil. Remember, it is easy for the world to believe the lies told by others in your inner circle. But, as a child of God, whenever you see people under attack, stand up for their defense. The silence of a good man is worse than the voice of the accuser. If you are not sure of the story, stay away from it. That accusation is over in the Name of Jesus. Every tongue that will rise against you in judgment is condemned, in Jesus’ Name. I pray that God will expose any area where you might be guilty of this sin.

O LORD, cleanse my heart and help me to speak nothing but the truth at all times. Forgive me of my lying tongue in Jesus’ Name.
