Fret Not Yourself

Proverbs 24:19-20 (KJV)

Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked: For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.

It can be disheartening to witness the success of wicked individuals. When it seems that evil prevails, that righteousness goes unrewarded, and that God’s promises remain unfulfilled, it’s natural to feel anxious. It’s tempting to look enviously upon the prosperity of those less devoted to God and His teachings and question the worth of our commitment and sacrifices. However, despite the weight of our responsibilities, we can take solace in the knowledge that the Lord is our protector. In times when we are ridiculed for choosing what is right over what is easy, we can find comfort in the wisdom of Scripture, which advises us not to fret because of evildoers or to envy the wicked, for they have no lasting future and their light will eventually be extinguished. We can trust in God’s justice, knowing that the wicked will face the consequences of their actions. David repeated the same in Psalm 37:1-2, “Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.” It’s natural to feel frustrated when wrongdoers prosper, but just as grass withers and dies, so too will the prosperity of the wicked fade away.

Envy has the potential to lead individuals astray, causing a loss of focus on core values and principles. It can result in bitterness and serve as a distraction from our relationship with God. Instead of succumbing to envy towards the unrighteous, it is imperative to prioritize righteous living. Our ultimate reward lies not in earthly success but in the eternal life promised by God. By fixing our gaze on Him and His promises, we can attain peace and contentment, secure in the knowledge that He will provide for us. This perspective enables the maintenance of peace and contentment, acknowledging that God esteems our endeavors to live righteously. By focusing on God’s promises and placing our trust in His plan, we can sidestep the snares of envy and remain unwavering in our faith. Philippians 4:11 says, “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. The Apostle Paul penned these words while in prison, confronting difficult circumstances. However, he had discovered the key to contentment. He realized genuine contentment stems from trusting God’s provision and sovereignty, irrespective of our circumstances.

Beloved, do not covet the success, achievements, or status of the wicked. Their apparent accomplishments lead to eternal death. Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on your own spiritual journey. Focus on the abundance of blessings that God has showered into your life, and not on what others may have that you desire. Cultivate contentment with what you possess, and witness the transformative shift in your perspective on life. Endure challenges and remain faithful, knowing that your ultimate reward is with God. God is the ultimate provider, granting you the power to achieve wealth. Your workplace, business, or government are not the true sources of your prosperity. Therefore, your duty is to reject evil, do good, and dwell eternally. The Lord sees your true intentions; you may deceive others, but not the Lord. Aim to please only Him, and do not concern yourself with pleasing those around you, as God’s justice will prevail in judging the wicked. Have faith that God’s justice will be served in His perfect timing. Today, pray for the unwavering faith to believe in God. Cultivate a heart of gratitude by regularly thanking God for His blessings. Gratitude can transform your perspective and help you see the abundance in your life, rather than focusing on what you don’t have. Remember, God sees the bigger picture and is working all things for your good, even when it seems like the wicked is winning,

O Lord, teach me to trust in Your provision and to find my satisfaction in You alone in Jesus’ Name.
