Fulfill Your Promise

2 Samuel 21:7 (KJV)

But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the Lord’s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

Our anchored Scripture emphasizes the significance of maintaining loyalty and upholding obligations. David’s decision to spare Mephibosheth was rooted in a promise he made to Jonathan, demonstrating the value of keeping one’s word, even when it is difficult. As the most prominent living heir of Saul, Mephibosheth was the logical choice to be the first of the seven descendants of Saul to be handed over to the Gibeonites for execution. However, David protected and blessed him to fulfill his promise to Jonathan. David’s action shows us the importance of being faithful to our promises. The relationship between David and Jonathan was marked by deep loyalty and love, built and maintained on trust and mutual respect. Despite the difficult circumstances, God’s plan was at work. David’s sparing of Mephibosheth was part of God’s greater plan, showing us that God is always in control, even when we don’t fully understand His ways. Just as David honored his covenant with Jonathan, God is always faithful to His promises. We can rely on the unwavering faithfulness of God to fulfill His word in our lives, regardless of the challenges posed by circumstances.

God’s dealings with humanity are rooted in unyielding covenants that stand the test of time. These covenants are immutable and must be upheld, even when humans fail to take them seriously. God expects an unwavering commitment to these covenants from us. It is vital to understand that promises are voluntary; they come out of our mouths as a personal commitment or solemn promise. In a world where commitments can often be broken, honoring our word reflects God’s faithfulness to us. Adhering to an oath demonstrates a profound sense of integrity and loyalty, particularly in challenging circumstances. It entails upholding our promises and obligations, even when doing so is burdensome or expensive. Psalm 15:4 says, “In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.” The act of honoring an oath, even in the face of adversity, underscores the importance of maintaining integrity. Despite the potential imprudence of entering into a covenant, it is incumbent upon us to uphold our commitments in accordance with divine expectations, for this kind of faithfulness reflects God’s unwavering faithfulness to us.

Beloved, be a man or woman of your word; fulfill your promise because God honors those who keep their word. Do not break your word, no matter what the devil is showing to you. Ensure that you redeem your promise and avoid the wrath of God. Do not be a covenant-breaker because no such person will enter the Kingdom of God. As a promise defaulter, you call for God’s divine hammer to fall on you. Always make it a habit to think through things before you talk or make a promise, counting the costs and consequences. Don’t become a victim of your own words; think carefully before saying anything. Live with integrity and discernment, honoring God in all your relationships and commitments. Build relationships that reflect God’s love and faithfulness. If you have made any promise and have refused to fulfill it, repent now, seek God’s forgiveness, and see that you take the necessary steps towards amending your ways and fulfilling such promises. As a child of God, your integrity must never be questioned, so before you commit yourself in any way, always exercise due diligence and seek God’s guidance. Remember, keep your promise and show kindness and mercy to others, especially those who are vulnerable or in need.

O Lord, help me be faithful in my commitments and the grace to honor my promises in Jesus’ Name.
