Glory and Beauty

Proverbs 20:29 (KJV)

The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.

Our anchored Scripture highlights the different strengths and virtues that come with varying stages of life. We exude pride in our physical strength and boundless energy in our youth. This is a time of great potential, where we can conquer challenges and push the limits of what we can achieve. Young people channel their strength and vitality to serve others and make a profound, positive impact. In the age range of 18 to 34, the youth typically experience peak physical strength due to reaching skeletal and muscular maturity. The extraordinary power of their strength lies in the remarkable ability of their body to convert food into bone and muscle, fueled by high levels of human growth hormone and testosterone. The physical training yields immediate results, their recovery from strenuous activity is accelerated, and their heightened hormonal drive instills aggressive confidence in the face of danger or labor. After this period marks a decline in physical capabilities, with the ability to run fastest, lift the most, and work the hardest diminishing gradually. Ecclesiastes 12:1 says, “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;”

As we age, our physical capabilities may diminish, but we acquire a priceless asset: wisdom and experience, epitomized by the emergence of gray hair. Individuals who have reached the stage of developing gray hair have been presented with numerous opportunities to accumulate wisdom and knowledge. These gray-haired individuals have navigated different life stages and endured challenges, gaining insights that the younger generation has yet to acquire. This wealth of experience deserves recognition and reverence. Proverbs 16:31 says, “The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.” While not inherently indicative of righteousness, the color gray conveys a sense of maturity. The presence of gray hair does not unequivocally signify submission to the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. While it is not an absolute measure of an individual’s discernment, caution, or piety, it generally indicates the accumulation of wisdom and maturity with age. Despite societal norms that often portray aging negatively and youth positively, it’s essential to recognize that God is present throughout every stage of life. Even as we age, we are presented with opportunities to contribute to God’s kingdom and make a positive impact on the lives of others. The Lord promises in Isaiah 46:4, “And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.” As we journey through our later years with God, we are confident that our vitality will endure. We will continue to bear fruit, remaining vigorous and full of life, just like a tree that stays vibrant and green in old age.

Beloved, when considering your God-given responsibilities, it’s essential to efficiently utilize your innate abilities, talents, and opportunities without delay, as physical limitations and declining health are inevitable. Pursue your life ambitions promptly, as early action increases the likelihood of achieving destiny. Leverage your strengths to achieve significant milestones, acknowledging and developing your potential. Lead a purposeful life by maximizing your talents. While physical prowess is valuable, prioritize the pursuit of wisdom and insight. Appreciate and harness the unique strengths and opportunities at each life stage. Regardless of age, recognize that there is a divine purpose for your existence. Show respect and deference to those who have preceded you, as their experiences and knowledge can serve as a valuable guide in your own journey. This encouragement to respect and learn from the experiences of older adults should make you feel inspired and motivated in your journey.

O Lord, thank You for the different seasons of life. Grant me wisdom to grow and learn and a heart that honors those who have walked the path before me in Jesus’ Name.
