The Significance Of Jesus’ Final Words

John 19:30 (KJV)

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head and gave up the ghost.

The statement “It is finished,” uttered by Jesus on the cross, powerfully encapsulates the fulfillment of His redemptive mission throughout His three-year ministry. This declaration marks the decisive completion of His work to atone for the sins of humanity, fully realizing the righteous requirements in Scripture. By willingly sacrificing Himself, He bore the penalty for sin and established a direct pathway for reconciliation between humanity and God. Jesus’ triumphant cry represents a bold declaration of victory over the forces of evil, signaling His ultimate conquest over sin and death. While His crucifixion may have seemed like a definitive end, it signaled the beginning of the divine plan for salvation to unfold. In the face of severe physical suffering, being beaten, mocked, and crucified, He fulfilled the prophetic Scriptures that foretold the coming Messiah. Therefore, the crucifixion is not merely an endpoint but the pivotal act from which God will unleash the transformative power of His redemptive plan for all of humanity. This was a moment of unparalleled significance, heralding the start of a profound new era in the relationship between God and His creation. John 17:4 says, “I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.” Jesus glorified the Father by completing the work given to Him, willingly sacrificing Himself to pay the penalty for our sins, and enabling our reconciliation with God.

At the crucifixion, the Great Exchange powerfully transformed the spiritual landscape, granting believers victory and peace. This moment unequivocally signifies the complete atonement for sin, as God the Father regarded His Perfect Son as having borne the weight of humanity’s transgressions. This pivotal event unmistakably illustrates the truth of substitutionary atonement in Christian theology. Genesis 3:15 says, “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” God kept His Promise to crush satan’s head through the bruising of His Son. Isaiah 53:10 says, “Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.” Jesus died on the cross to restore our relationship with God. The Blood of Jesus achieved reconciliation between God and humanity. Through His sacrifice, we now have full access to God the Father.
