Lean Not On Your Understanding

Proverbs 3:5–6(ESV)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

In our walk with God, complete reliance on Him is very vital, for He has always proved Himself to be trustworthy. Trusting in the Lord entails implicitly obeying Him, having a reverential fear of Him, cherishing His Word, bringing Him into the picture in everything we do, giving a due portion of what we have to His Service, and gladly submitting to His Discipline. To experience exploits in our lives, we must trust God in all circumstances. Involving Him in the planning of our lives makes us different from the rest. Therefore, as we program our actions with the directives of God, we will arrive at the topmost top. No matter how good we are in strategic planning, there is a need for us to subordinate our plans under God’s Will and allow Him to have His way in our lives. No wonder Psalm 37:5 says, “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.” As we walk through the perplexity of life, leaning on our limited understanding is irrational and detrimental.

We all have times when our plans do not work out. We get delayed, interrupted, and embarrassed. It is easy to get frustrated and fight against everything that does not go our way. But God will guide us toward His goals for our growth. His ultimate goal is that we become more like Him. It does not mean that the paths He chooses will be easy. But we can choose to trust that His direction and timing are ultimately for our good. No matter how brilliant you are in your field of practice, always lean on God for what to do and what not to do. Many people have made terrible mistakes that are still hurting them because they thought they were making the right move based on their professional assessments. Many Christians today live like the world around them: they hardly pray before making decisions, even though we are not to lean on our own understanding, but acknowledge God in ALL our ways. Nahum 1:7 says, “The LORD is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him.” God never fails to guide those who put their trust in Him. Even when we face terrible suffering, we know God can deliver us; however, we must still trust Him if He chooses not to. Only by holding the hand of our Father in the valley can we endure to see the light of the mountaintop ahead. When Abraham trusted God, the lamb for the sacrifice was already on the top of the mountain(Genesis 22:1-8). What we are looking for is already supplied, but the challenge is that we have refused to trust God. Some blessings and provisions will only be on the mountaintop of trust and obedience.

Beloved, it always pays to trust God at all times. Trust in the Lord with your all, and your expectations will not be cut off. You may not understand what is happening around you, but I encourage you to hang in there, and God will certainly come through for you. Surrendering your desires to God is not easy, and His wisdom can be hard to understand in challenging moments. But choose to draw near to Him and trust that He will guide you. Make up your mind to make God the first, the last, and final consideration of your life. There is a lot to gain from always asking God for advice. If you want to win in every area of your life, do not lean on your understanding. Never assume that you know what to do, where to go, or who is anything; instead, trust in God, acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path. Today, forget about all the negative situations you are in and acknowledge Him. Begin to remember all that God has done for you in the past and praise Him like never before. As you acknowledge Him, He will direct your path and make a way in the Red Sea. Load your mind with the word of God. Think often on His Word and focus on Jesus. Involve God in your thoughts and plans, and your life will never be the same. Trust Him for direction before you take any step-in life. God is still in control. Despite how distant He appears to be, He is right in the middle of your situation to bring you out. Remember, the enemy will attack the foundation of your trust in God by attacking your heart with the fiery arrow of doubt.

O Lord, help me trust Your Guidance and submit to Your will for my life in Jesus’ Name.
