Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled

John 14:27(ESV)

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Jesus, after the last supper with His disciples together, prepared them for the events that would soon follow: His death, resurrection, and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Describing a peace—unlike anything the world can give—He wanted them to learn how to find a sense of well-being even in the midst of hardship. Jesus promised them peace and that their hearts should not be troubled nor afraid. The mission of Jesus is to bring peace to us. He is our peace, and no wonder He is called the Prince of peace. We cannot have Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, and be in pieces or crisis. The life of our Lord Jesus Christ on earth shows us that we can have peace amidst the storms of life. Jesus holds the key to walking in God’s peace. That is, He guides us in a way that brings peace. He is the possessor of peace, and He has bequeathed this peace to us all. John 16:33 says, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” The peace the world is looking for is in Jesus Christ; no wonder it eludes them because they’re searching for it in the wrong places. Our Lord Jesus Christ has overcome the world for all believers, making us more than conquerors of this world. Therefore, it makes no difference what’s going on in the world but to be at peace.

Peace is freedom from anxiety or distress. It is the state of calmness and restfulness amid pressures, confrontations, and circumstances. Peace is knowing that God is in total and complete control of all things and at all times. The Bible is clear that no matter what we may be facing, God’s desire for us is to be victorious, even when our problems feel overwhelming. The peace our Lord Jesus Christ promised us is not the absence of trouble or trials. But a calming comfort and assurance that God is in control of whatever situation we may be going through. Knowing as to be His children, He will not allow the enemy to swallow us up. Based on human experience, life is painful, laborious, burdensome, and full of sorrow, but in Jesus, we have peace. Life will have its difficulties, but our Savior, who loves us more than life, is greater than them all. Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” As much as the devil will use turbulent storms to generate crises in our lives, leading to worry and anxiety, we have Jesus. When we give our battles to the Lord, we are in a position to win. Nothing in this world can have enduring power over us because Jesus Christ promised complete victory for us over life’s issues and problems. The Holy Spirit speaking through Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 4:7, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” His peace transcends all understanding, guarding our hearts and minds. In other words, it is above and beyond what we can understand. It is a great thing to have this peace of God inside us.

Beloved, let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid, for God is with you, and He is not a God of confusion but peace, and He desires to give you peace. Jesus is not a failure, so you cannot fail because you are in Christ. It is not possible to be in Him and not have His peace. No matter what may be going on in your life today, you can still live in peace. No matter how dire or trivial, you can turn to Jesus. The enemy knows this, and his goal is to steal your peace. He tries to set you up to get you upset. But when you choose to receive God’s peace, no weapon formed against you shall prosper! When you can’t sleep because you’re troubled by life’s trials, contrary to counting sheep, you can talk to the Good Shepherd in prayer, for He has promised to give you peace. In His Presence, you can make your worries and fears known to Him, for His peace gives freedom from anxiety concerning the past, present, and future. Peace and rest in this world belong to those who have surrendered their lives to God through His Son. In Christ, you will find peace and all-around rest. The choice is yours. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” God, Jehovah Shalom, is the peace that passes all understanding to give you victory! You will finish well in Jesus’ Name. You’re in Jesus, and that makes all the difference. You are an overcomer! Remember, His great gift of peace will carry you through all the seasons of life.

O Lord, thank You for the gift of peace which passes all understanding. Help me trust in You as I receive Your Peace in Jesus’ Name.
