Colossians 3:1-2 (KJV)
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
The Apostle Paul, in his heartfelt message to the Colossian church, inspired them to seek heavenly things and to set their affections on them. He urges those united with Christ in His death and resurrection to actively seek and fix their hearts on what is above, for being risen with Christ signifies a profound transformation in our faith and a new identity in Him. As participants in His new life, earthly attachments lose their hold on us. We are liberated from the chains of sin and no longer defined by the struggles of our earthly existence, but called to fully embrace the reality of our resurrection. Seeking what is above is not a passive endeavor, but a vibrant pursuit, for just as our bodies require nourishment, our souls crave the divine offerings from God’s heavenly realm. When we seek the things above, we earnestly desire God’s will for our lives, surrendering our earthly visions to gain a heavenly perspective. Our true home lies not here but is eternally secured in Heaven. Setting our affections on things above requires us to reassess the influences in our daily lives, for our affections reveal where our hearts are anchored.
In life, many challenges act as distractions from the enemy, preventing us from pursuing our true destiny. A wise person recognizes the goal, anticipates the obstacles, and plans accordingly. Countless distractions hinder us from bearing fruit and seeking heavenly things, for these are the greatest obstacles to our empowerment. Distractions aim to sever our connection to our God-given destiny. Whenever we take a bold step of faith, the devil will present distractions to divert our focus from the prize. Jesus, aware of how easily our hearts can stray from His treasure, urged His followers in Matthew 6:19-21 to invest in treasures in Heaven, where security and sustainability await. Our investment in heavenly pursuits will be our legacy if we reach Heaven. Let’s start setting our affections on heavenly things today. Nothing can steal our inheritance or extinguish the dreams God has given us if we allow Heaven to fill our thoughts. Our lives are intertwined with Christ in God, and when He appears, we too will shine with Him in glory, for our present choices are shaped by a profound reality awaiting full revelation.
Beloved, embrace your identity in Christ and seek the profound truths that elevate you into a life of holiness, hope, and divine purpose. Invest in what will matter forever, transforming your heart and the world around you with His love. Focus on the bigger picture and recognize what may distract you in your Christian walk. Keep your attention on the Lord amid all trials, temptations, and obstacles, for your challenges may feel heavy, but they cannot hinder the calling God has placed on your life. Your path is set, and your future is assured. Surrender all to Jesus Christ, for this shift takes the focus off yourself and onto Christ, trusting that God is working something through you. Keep your eyes on the prize, avoiding distractions from life’s situations. Don’t permit the world’s distractions to blind you to the glorious things of the spirit. Align your priorities with God’s Word. Seek the things above, steering clear of earthly pursuits that lead to destruction. Make a firm decision to be who God has called you to be. It doesn’t matter what your position in life is now; strive to be the Elisha of this age, pursuing what matters, and fulfill your destiny! As you practice seeking and contemplating the things above, your actions will naturally reflect the life you share with Christ. Remember, your righteous life springs from your identity in Christ, not merely from moral effort.
O LORD, help me to live from the reality of Your Resurrection, to set my mind on what is above, and to let Your life shape my choices in Jesus’ Name.
