Matthew 12:34(ESV)
You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
The power and significance of our words is a repeated topic in Scripture. The impact of our speech cannot be over emphasized, for the above Scripture makes it clear that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. This means our mouths speak forth the overflows of what is in our hearts, that is whatever is on the inside will surely come outside. Whenever we open our mouths, bits of what is stored within them comes forth thereby revealing our character. When God’s Word fills our hearts, our mouths will open in wisdom. If we are truly holy and filled with the Holy Spirit, it will reflect in our words and show in how we speak to others. When we become drunk with the words of success, we speak them naturally. As written in Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Our tongues are potent enough to either make us or destroy us, gun down our lives or build up our destinies. Ecclesiastes 5:2 says “Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart.”
The greatest benefits that flow to the people of God from our words are the present support and future provision. Words can change our present situation and future for either the good or worst. The words we speak would either bring down rain to water the seeds sown or establish a drought that will destroy the seeds. It is time to begin to water the labors of our hands, by speaking the right kind of words. As believers of the Gospel, we need to fill our hearts with the Right Words. Instead of destroying lives through thoughtless words, we can bless others. We can comfort and not curse. We can use this “comely part” to benefit others. Proverbs 21:23 says “Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.” The truth is, our speech determines our reach in life and the way we talk determines the way we end for there is no destiny for the careless talkers. When the world is speaking its language of lack, sicknesses, stagnation, hopelessness, defeats, trials, failures and so on learn to speak the Heavenly language of supernatural provision, good health, victory, increase, testimonies and the list goes on. When we learn to speak God’s Word over our situations, we are superimposing what God has said over every contrary situation in our lives.
Beloved, the strategy of the devil is to put you under extreme pressure so that you say the wrong or negative things. So, the next time he backs you to the wall and applies pressure, rather than confess negatively, choose to praise and thank the Lord. Watch your heart, because that is where your words are formed. Speak life where everything seems dead, speak your conviction rather than your condition, speak peace wherever there is conflict, and speak love to the depressed. Don’t speak negativity and expect to see positivity, failure and expect to see success or speak frustration and expect to see satisfaction. Don’t run your life down or join anybody to run it down in your presence or absence by negative words. Always be the positive one out in the mix of negative people. Today, begin to speak positive words into your life, your children’s lives and every situation around you. Remember, God is committed to whatever you say, whether it is said in the public or privately.
O Lord, thank You for Your Word, help me to always speak the right words even in adversity in Jesus’ Name.
