Psalm 106:1-2 (KJV)
Praise ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever. Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord? who can shew forth all his praise?
Thanksgiving to God is a decisive spiritual action with proven impact and effect. The Psalmist encourages us to thank the Lord, for He is good, and His mercy endures forever. Throughout the Scriptures, we are encouraged also to thank God, for He is good. The goodness and mercy of God are not dependent on any outside circumstances but on the truth that God is good and merciful; He does only good. Giving thanks to God keeps us in the proper perspective of our relationship with Him. Thanksgiving is the door that ushers us into God’s blessings. Psalm 107:22, “And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.” We are to offer sacrifices of thanksgiving to God and declare His Works with rejoicing. Doing this moves Him to do what we cannot do for ourselves.
Without a doubt, God is inherently good. He is the ultimate authority, above all other gods and lords. It is undeniable that God, in His very nature and essence, is fundamentally good and possesses immeasurable power. We connect to God’s goodness and mercy when we thank Him. For our lives to continuously experience the Lord’s goodness and mercy, we must be thankful to Him in all circumstances. As difficult as that may sound, there are good reasons we are to embrace the spirit of thanksgiving. Thanking God is grounded in the truth that He is good and His love endures forever. The Lord has been very good and merciful to us. For these reasons and many more, we need to make giving thanks to God our lifestyle. He has never ceased to be faithful and kind. The devil would have destroyed us if it had not been for the Lord on our side. We are to continuously thank God and show appreciation for the many things we usually take for granted. Being thankful focuses our attention on the goodness of God and gives us the strength to make it through our struggles. Thanking God for what He did in the past qualifies us for what He will do again. It is a virtue that grows through practice. Psalm 86:12-13 says, “I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever. For great is your steadfast love toward me; you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.”
