The Cost Of Despising Counsel

Proverbs 1:30-31 (KJV)

They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

Our anchored Scripture clearly warns against despising wisdom and counsel, highlighting the crucial importance of following God’s guidance. It is abundantly clear that those who ignore wisdom’s counsel open themselves up to serious consequences. To “have none of my counsel” represents a definitive refusal of sound guidance, while despising reproof demonstrates a rejection of correction, even when it’s intended to protect and uplift us. The outcome is straightforward: we reap what we sow. Every choice we make plants a seed, and only time reveals the harvest. Opting for our own path without the filter of wisdom results in consequences shaped by our own decisions, trapping us in the very desires we pursued without seeking counsel. The consequences of our choices are not random punishments, but are natural outcomes, carefully planned, sometimes painfully, to guide us back to God’s wisdom. Proverbs 19:20 says, “Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.” Wisdom is not a mere conception, but a vibrant, living invitation of God’s Spirit, urging us to choose life, wisdom, and humility. Wisdom listens even when wounded, learns even when it stings.

In this life, to embrace reproof is to embrace possibility, for every seed, no matter how unpromising, can yield a harvest of righteousness if surrendered to God’s faithful gardening. Reproof is not condemnation, but a correction, an active, loving attempt to restore. Being corrected can feel uncomfortable. Hebrews 12:11 says, “Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.” This reproof, while uncomfortable at times, is indeed a necessary component of spiritual and personal growth. Many of us don’t like being told we’re wrong because we often prefer praise over criticism. However, correction is a way of showing love. When we receive counsel, whether from the Spirit, God’s Word, or from trusted individuals, it provides us with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding and grow as individuals. The challenge for today is not merely to avoid foolishness but to actively cultivate wisdom, by welcoming correction, weighing our motives, and seeking God’s guidance in every decision. In doing so, we do not simply avoid eating the fruit of our own way but become trees of life, bearing good fruit for a hungry, watching world.

Beloved, embracing reproof is not a single act but a lifestyle. It’s an opportunity, not a threat; embracing it leads to deeper maturity and fruitfulness. Each moment of correction, given or received, becomes an invitation to transformation, for true wisdom begins with acknowledging the limits of your own perception. Each day, you will make choices, some seemingly minor, others momentous, but all choices plant seeds that will, in due season, bear fruit. Choosing not to listen to counsel isn’t just a lack of knowledge; it’s a deliberate choice to ignore helpful advice. Turning your back on corrections doesn’t put you in a neutral position; instead, it leaves you spiritually empty, much like a house that has been cleared of all its belongings. Today, treat every decision as the planting of a seed, where both the act and the intention will, inevitably, become your fruit to taste. View feedback not as an attack on your identity but as a gift that refines your character and aligns your path with God’s best. Before seeking advice, pray and ask God for wisdom in choosing the correct counsel. It’s the only thing that can permanently solve the problems you’ve been facing. Remember, the real spiritual maturity is not avoiding all mistakes, but letting the fruit of your experience, whether sweet or sour, drive you to deeper dependence on God and openness to reproof.

O Lord, grant me a humble heart that welcomes correction, a discerning mind that seeks Your counsel, and a courageous spirit to align my desires with Your will in Jesus’ Name.
