But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
The lifestyle of lies is a dangerous foe to our true destiny and can lead to dire consequences. In Acts 5, we see the profound repercussions of dishonesty, especially in our relationship with the Holy Spirit and God. Ananias and Sapphira chose not to reveal the full truth about their asset sale, keeping some for themselves. They deceived Apostle Peter, unaware they were actually lying to the Holy Spirit. Tragically, their choice led to their immediate demise. First, Ananias fell, followed hours later by Sapphira, who also met the same fate. Their desire for recognition, fueled by hypocrisy, ultimately led them to death. Together, they respected each other enough to engage in deceit against God, but honesty could have changed their story. They were not compelled to sell their land; they simply chose to mislead the Holy Spirit, and they faced grave consequences. Let this serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of honesty and sincerity in our lives. Proverbs 19:9 says, “A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.”
In this life, we create barriers not only in our relationships but also in our spiritual journey when we embrace the truth, as the Holy Spirit works in honesty. The Bible teaches us in Proverbs 6:16-19 that God detests the lying tongue, for deceit is an abomination to Him. Anything that deviates from the truth is a lie, and God strictly forbids the act of lying, as it yields no good. Speaking untruths against anyone or the church brings forth devastating consequences. Lies are among the devil’s greatest tools, ensnaring people in falsehood. Those who dwell in deception are aligned with the father of lies, while the presence of truth invites the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, into our lives. The battle for the souls of humanity is intense, as Satan strives relentlessly to keep people shackled in darkness and error. Our generation is marked by a staggering prevalence of falsehood, characterized by false apostles, false prophets, false teachers, false brethren, false news, false accusations, and false witnesses. To pursue what truly matters in life, it is essential to know and act upon the truth. Many find themselves in bondage, as liars become natural candidates for captivity. In haste, they sow seeds of falsehood, unaware of the negative harvest they will inevitably reap. These seeds can affect their lives and the lives of their children for generations. When we lie or bear false witness against our friends, we plant seeds that will flourish in this world and the next. Similarly, when we lie to or about our leaders, we set in motion a harvest that we will surely encounter.
Beloved, to lie is akin to dying, for falsehood stands as the enemy of true livelihood. In essence, a lie is a lie, whether small or large in our eyes. Commit to speaking the truth always, and steer clear of the path of falsehood. Resolve to remain steadfast against insincerity and resist the urge to impress anyone. Instead, offer your complete honesty to God, withholding nothing in your confession and repentance, for He cherishes authenticity in His children and prizes integrity and truthfulness. God sees the heart; pretending to be more generous or holy than you truly are leads to destruction. Whatever the cost, cling to the truth, for anything that honesty and truthfulness cannot bring you holds no value. As a child of God, when you witness a believer under attack, refrain from joining in the accusations that tarnish their reputation. If uncertainty clouds the story, choose silence, for the restraint of a good person speaks volumes against the voice of a liar. Today, direct your heart toward truth to cultivate honest relationships with God and others. Confess and repent for any lies told, whether in jest to gain favor, to protect yourself, or to implicate another. Flee from lies (the devil) and embrace Jesus Christ, the Truth! Guard against grieving the Holy Spirit at all costs. Do not let a lie linger, as none can predict when Jesus will return. Stand firm in the truth at all times, proclaiming your commitment to honesty before the world and the devil. In moments of temptation to lie, remember the fate of Ananias and Sapphira, who faced dire consequences in a single day due to deceit.
O Lord, I confess and repent of every lie, whether conscious or unconscious. I receive the grace to always stand for the truth in Jesus’ Name.
