The Lord Is Our Refuge

Psalm 91:9-10 (KJV)

Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, Even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, Neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

Our anchored Scripture boldly declares that we find true rest and security in God. Those who place their trust in the Lord are assured protection from harm and disease. He stands as our unwavering hope and shelter, shielding us from chaos. We are distinct, safeguarded, and embraced in the profound love and grace that flows from the very Heart of God, always under the vigilant care of the Supreme God, Sovereign over all. He is our steadfast refuge, granting us clarity and understanding amidst the storm, all while we remain securely anchored in His Presence. Psalm 18:2-3 says, “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.” It is a fact that we live in an increasingly wicked and dangerous world. However, the good news is that no matter how threatening the world and people get, God will deliver His children in terrifying times because we serve a God eternally committed to His children’s preservation. There is no safer refuge or more formidable stronghold than our Sovereign Lord. In His refuge, we experience His protective shade and shadow.

A refuge is a place of shelter, protection, or safety. The Lord is our stronghold, a fortress, well-fortified and safe from our enemies. God is all-powerful and in control of all, including our chaos and pain. He protects us from the terror by night and arrows that fly by day. We have victory when we trust in the God of all gods; He is the God that cannot be defeated or toppled by the storms of life. Our God is the Invincible Fortress and the Unfailing Refuge where the oppressed and tormented receive help and safety. He does not ignore the cry of those who genuinely seek Him in repentance and humility through Jesus Christ. When we trust in Him, He wields His power to tame the raging hurricanes of life. Psalm 9:9 says, “The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.” When the Lord becomes our habitation, He promises to protect us from pestilence, terror, destruction, death, sickness, and disease. Even when circumstances shout the opposite, we can confidently declare that God is our refuge.

Beloved, facing battles in life is normal, but God has promised to be your refuge and habitation. It doesn’t matter the magnitude of the problems confronting you; believe that He is your refuge and fortress, and He will stand by you during all the attacks of your enemies. In Him, you have hope, but outside of His hope, you will struggle with hopelessness. In His refuge, you find healing for your wounds, the strength to face perpetual difficulties, learn to be gracious to those who hurt you, and lean on God’s understanding. Today, set your affection on things above and not on things on earth. Run to Him for help, and He will protect you from all attacks from the pit of hell. Allow yourself to be overwhelmed by God. He loves and cares for you and can make good out of bad situations. Dwell in His Presence, meditate on His Word, and sing praises to Him. Like David, recount God’s goodness in your life and look to the present in anticipation and expectation. Remember, the Lord of Hosts is still with you; the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is your refuge. Run to Him today with your worries, fears, and regrets, and He will bring you peace and strength to stand again.

O Lord, thank You for being my hiding place and refuge. Keep me secure for the rest of my life in Jesus’ Name.
