For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
The above Scripture serves as a powerful reminder for believers, highlighting the importance of humility and selflessness while warning of the pitfalls of envy and strife. It encourages us to reflect on our motivations and actions, prioritizing cooperation and consideration for others over personal gain. Envy arises when we feel distress over what others possess. This longing can ignite conflict, manifesting in harsh words, bitterness, and even violence. It is a force that can devastate our souls, bodies, and lives. Envy distorts our rational thinking, making us more subjective than objective. It can pervert our minds, impact our health, tarnish our reputations, and ultimately undermine our lives. The danger of envy lies in its ability to trigger a cascade of negative events in our lives. If we let it flourish in our hearts, we risk spiritual, emotional, and physical decay. Envy can give rise to jealousy and lead to deep-seated resentment and harm. Embracing envy jeopardizes our souls and fosters pride, which can contaminate our well-being and pave the way to self-destruction. Instead, we should strive for a spirit of gratitude and love, recognizing that envy only invites confusion and strife into our lives. Proverbs 14:30 says, “A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.”
Envy is a powerful emotion, often masked by admiration or indifference. It can settle in our hearts, clouding our thoughts and actions. The root of envy lies in a dissatisfied heart, emerging when we cannot attain what we deeply desire. When envy and strife take root among us, they obscure our judgment and distort our perceptions, hindering our unity as the body of Christ. Jealousy taints our views, leading us to make decisions disconnected from truth and love. God’s Word clearly condemns envy as a work of the flesh. Job 5:2 says, “For wrath killeth the foolish man and envy slayeth the silly one.” Envy is a serious character flaw that those who have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord must strive to overcome. Christians need to guard their hearts against envy, possible only through the crucifixion of the self. Many believers grapple with selfhood, and where self exists, envy thrives. Numerous criticisms and complaints today often stem from envy and jealousy. Some individuals go to great lengths to discredit and harm others out of envy. The first instance of envy in the Bible appears in the story of Cain and Abel, where Cain, the elder brother, killed Abel because God favored his brother’s sacrifice over his own (Genesis 4:3–5). Korah, Dathan, and Abiram faced dire consequences for their envy-driven rebellion against Moses (Numbers 16:1-3), and their generation was lost. Envy also played a role in the Jewish leaders’ decision to arrest Jesus (Mark 15:10).
Beloved, the cost of envy can be steep. There is no benefit in envying anyone; it can rob you of your blessings and impact generations to come. Rather than envying someone who is blessed, learn from their journey, for their blessings do not diminish yours. Choose contentment today and embrace peace. Find happiness in any circumstance, as God has a unique plan for you that aligns with your talents, gifts, and needs. Looking at others with envy steals your joy from the blessings meant for you. Repent and make a change today. Pray for God’s love to fill your heart, for love does not envy. If you find envy toward your brothers and sisters in Christ, then love is missing. Reject envy and its allure; it cannot coexist with a fulfilling life. Your actions and attitudes can create a ripple of positive energy, fostering harmony and enlightenment. Build a solid foundation for peace and wisdom by reflecting on your inner self and striving for balance. Choosing the path of peace and wisdom demands dedication, patience, and a sincere wish to positively influence the world. Remember, you enhance harmony and understanding in your interactions with others when your motives are pure, free from selfish ambition and jealousy.
O Lord, in Your mercy, uproot and destroy every trace of envy and strife in my heart in Jesus’ Name.
