1 Samuel 16:7 (KJV)
But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
Our anchor Scripture reminds us that while man looks at the outside, God gazes into the heart. As Samuel entered Bethlehem, he called for Jesse and his sons to anoint the future king. Samuel first saw Eliab, the eldest, and was captivated by his impressive appearance, thinking he had found the chosen one. But the Lord rejected Eliab, emphasizing that He looks beyond mere appearances. God corrected Samuel, revealing that He seeks those with faithful hearts, hearts aligned with His divine purposes, pure, devoted, and ready to follow His leading. We often judge others based on outward appearances, yet God looks beyond actions to discern the intentions of our hearts. What He desires is a heart perfect toward Him, for He perceives what others cannot. God sees the hidden depths, the inner thoughts and desires residing in our hearts and minds. In His eyes, it’s not looks that matter, but the authenticity and beauty of our hearts. Jeremiah 17:10 says, “I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” People may see perfection in what someone does, but God may see faulty intentions or motives behind the action.
In a world obsessed with image, God invites us to cultivate inner substance. The condition of our hearts holds immense significance to God. A heart that longs for righteousness captures God’s attention. It’s crucial to understand that with God, actions are measured (1 Samuel 2:3). Appearances can be misleading, for our outward facade does not reveal our true selves. Physical traits do not define our value, character, integrity, or faithfulness to God. Outward qualities are merely superficial; moral and spiritual considerations far outweigh them in importance. King David urged his son Solomon to know and serve God with a perfect heart and a willing mind, for the LORD searches all hearts and understands the thoughts behind them (1 Chronicles 28:9). In 2 Chronicles 25:1-2, we learn that Amaziah did right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart. Many may engage in the right actions in their service to God, yet lack a perfect heart. Some attend church seeking miracles rather than serving God wholeheartedly, moving from one miracle center to another, forgetting that God is always watching. Luke 16:15 says, “Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.”
Beloved, let your heart be pure before God, for He always sees beyond the surface. Cultivate genuine and sincere motives in every action, knowing that God looks deeply into your heart. With a right heart, humbly seek His Ways each day, striving to please Him. Embrace sincere transformation rather than mere outward compliance. Submit every aspect of your life to Him, ready to make adjustments and welcome His corrections. Make knowing God through His Son, Jesus Christ, your top priority. Yield yourself to Him and allow Him to shape your character, serving Him with all your strength. Foster a sincere and personal relationship with Him. In your interactions, look beyond surface appearances and take the time to see others as He sees them. Since you can’t perceive what the Lord sees, rely on His wisdom. Be genuine and authentic, understanding that God values the condition of your heart above all. Let Him witness your faithfulness, character, and true worth. As a Christian, remember you are called to see others through God’s loving gaze, moving past preconceptions and praying for a heart that sees their true essence. Though others may choose leaders for charm, God will exalt His faithful servants. Remember, you can never hide your true self from God, for He sees directly into your heart.
O LORD, search my heart and align my motives with Yours. Help me to love You with a perfect heart in Jesus’ Name.
