The Fall Of Pride

Proverbs 11:2 (KJV)

When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

Our anchored Scripture highlights the powerful contrast between pride and humility, showing that while pride can lead to poor decisions and disgrace, humility opens the door to true wisdom. Though pride is often celebrated in our world today, the Bible offers a different perspective. It reveals pride as an expression of arrogance and inflated self-worth, leading us to view others as inferior. When we elevate ourselves or refuse correction, we create pathways to failure and shame. Pride narrows our vision, making us defensive and isolating us from wise counsel. It tempts us to cover our mistakes rather than learn from them, closing our hearts and blinding our minds. Insisting on being right, protecting our image, and resisting correction leads only to confusion and disappointment. As we lift ourselves up, we may encounter shame through failure, loss of favor, or unmet expectations. Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” Living with pride and arrogance is one of the surest paths to failure. Regardless of how powerful or full of potential a person may be, pride ultimately leads to a dead end.

Pride, while often seen as a strength, can be one of the most challenging traits to navigate. It can lead us away from our true destinies (Isaiah 14:12-15, Genesis 3:5) and can make us resistant to the wisdom others offer. Recognizing pride as a sin (Mark 7:21-23) encourages us to seek purity and clarity in our lives. Just as cancer can quietly grow, pride can insidiously take root, so it’s essential to keep it in check. Many individuals are so consumed by their pride that they fail to see that it is their own arrogance that has held them back. This pride often leads to a slew of misguided statements and actions that further illustrate their disconnect from reality. Romans 12:3 says, “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.” Pride stands as a barrier to fulfilling God’s greatest command: to love Him wholeheartedly and to love our neighbors as ourselves. When we let pride rise, we can find ourselves chasing after false idols, losing sight of the peace Christ offers. Embracing humility instead invites growth and understanding into our lives. By humbling ourselves and viewing our worth through a lens of gratitude rather than self-importance, we position ourselves for growth and fulfillment rather than a fall and disgrace.

Beloved, pride is the foundation of disgrace, destruction, ruining lives and altering destinies, and can cause a person to fall from great heights. Cultivate the right attitude for a quality destiny and steer clear of pride and arrogance. Avoid placing yourself in situations where God might resist you. Never overestimate yourself! Embrace humility and remain vigilant. When you notice yourself becoming inflated with your own greatness, take a moment to repent and remember that every good thing you enjoy and every success you experience is a result of God’s Grace and Power. No matter how powerful you may feel, no one is beyond God’s reach. Don’t let yourself become a legend in your own mind. Instead, humble yourself under the mighty Hand of God, allowing Him to do the exalting, which can prevent painful falls. Always remind yourself that you are nothing without God. Your achievements do not surpass those of others who are not yet at your level. What do you have that was not given to you? Any achievement that does not lead you back to the original Achiever, the Almighty God, is perilous. All glory belongs to God, so make it a habit to return glory to Him always. Today, choose to repent from any lifestyle of pride and arrogance. Remember, true greatness arises not from elevating yourself above others, but from embracing the service of others with an open heart.

O Lord, deliver me from every trace of pride and help me to remember that I am nothing without You in Jesus’ Name.
